Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a Montessori-based approach to faith formation that helps children encounter the love of Jesus, the Good Shepherd, in a deep and personal way. Through Scripture, liturgy, hands-on materials, and quiet prayer, children learn to recognize the voice of God and grow in relationship with Him.

This formation takes place in the Atrium—a specially prepared, peaceful environment designed just for children. In the Atrium, children engage with beautiful, tactile materials that help them understand the mysteries of our faith.

What Children Experience in the Atrium

  • Model Altar – Children learn the names of the sacred vessels used at Mass and practice setting the altar with care and reverence.
  • The Nativity Story – They hear and meditate on the Gospel of Jesus’ birth, then explore it through hands-on materials.
  • Land of Israel Map – Children discover the places where Jesus lived, forming a sense of sacred geography.

Each year builds upon the last, offering children the opportunity to deepen their understanding and grow in their relationship with Christ.
Saint Ambrose is proud to offer Level I and Level II CGS sessions.

I am the Good Shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me.

Level II CGS Adult Formation Course (2026–2027)

We are thrilled to host a Level II CGS Formation Course with national trainer Carolyn Kohlhaas.

  • Level II, Part A will be held August 10–15, 2026, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm each day.
  • Level II, Part B will take place on December 5–6, 2026; January 23–24, 2027; and February 20–21, 2027, also from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, with Sunday sessions beginning later to allow participants to attend Mass.

Course Training for Adults
The Level II Formation Course deepens a catechist’s understanding of how children ages 6–9 grow in faith. Building on Level I, it introduces themes such as the History of the Kingdom of God and the child’s growing moral awareness. Through prayer, Scripture, and hands-on materials, participants learn how to guide older children more intentionally in the Atrium.

Parish Sessions (2025–2026)

Children ages 3 (preschool) through 4th grade are invited to participate in weekly Catechesis of the Good Shepherd sessions.

Registration for the 2025–2026 year is now closed.

School Sessions

Saint Ambrose Catholic School integrates Catechesis of the Good Shepherd into the rhythm of our Early Childhood and Kindergarten classrooms. Each week, all Level I Early Childhood classes—including the Caterpillars, Butterflies, Cubs, Stars, and Dolphins—participate in CGS sessions in the Atrium.

Beginning in the 2023–2024 school year, we also introduced CGS for our Kindergarten students, who now visit the Atrium two to three times each month for age-appropriate prayer, Scripture reflection, and hands-on faith exploration.

How You Can Help

There are many meaningful ways to support Catechesis of the Good Shepherd at Saint Ambrose:

  • Volunteer as a catechist or substitute – Walk with children on their journey of faith by assisting in the Atrium. Training and ongoing support are provided.
  • Create or repair Atrium works – Use your gifts in sewing, painting, woodwork, or claywork to help maintain and beautify the materials children use in prayer.
  • Assist with CGS records – Help with simple behind-the-scenes organization that keeps our program running smoothly.
